Minimum Benchmark Score for University Admission Set at 140, JAMB Clarifies

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector, convened on Thursday for a policy meeting in Abuja, have established a minimum benchmark score of 140 for admission into universities. The clarification was provided by Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), during the ongoing session.

According to reports from The PUNCH, various universities have submitted their respective minimum benchmark scores to JAMB for consideration. Notably, institutions like Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos, Covenant University in Ogun State, Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State, and the University of Lagos have set their benchmark scores at 200 and above.

Oloyede emphasized that JAMB does not set cut-off marks but rather establishes a minimum benchmark score that universities cannot dip below for admissions. Each university is granted the autonomy to determine its specific cut-off point based on their individual criteria and standards.

The announcement comes amidst ongoing efforts to streamline admission processes and ensure transparency in university admissions across Nigeria. As the policy meeting continues, stakeholders are expected to further deliberate on issues related to admissions and educational standards in the country.
