The National Security Adviser (NSA) has pledged to assist state governors in managing potential security threats linked to upcoming protests advocating for improved governance. This commitment was revealed in a communique from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) following their meeting on Wednesday night.
The NGF’s statement detailed that members received a briefing from the NSA’s office on the current security climate and the anticipated protests. The NSA assured governors of support to bolster security measures at the state level.
The communique, signed by NGF chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, highlighted the governors’ appreciation for the NSA’s support and reiterated their dedication to safeguarding lives and property.
The forum also discussed the Supreme Court’s recent judgment regarding local government financial autonomy. However, it did not specify the NGF’s stance on the ruling.
Additionally, the communique covered various updates:
- Legal and Governance Briefings: The NGF received updates from the body of Attorneys General of the 36 states on the Supreme Court ruling and from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) about recent leadership changes and initiatives. The NBA expressed commitment to supporting state governance and the rule of law.
- Health Sector Developments: The Honorable Minister of Health and Social Welfare presented the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Program (NHSRIP), covering updates on the Sector-Wide Approach, the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), Primary Health Care (PHC) Revitalization, and the National Supply Chain Management.
- World Bank Engagement: The NGF met with the new Country Director of the World Bank, Mr. Ndiame Diop, and his team. They discussed various programs, including HOPE (Human Capital Opportunities for Prosperity and Equality), Food and Nutrition Security, and SPIN (Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria Project). The governors expressed support for these initiatives and pledged to collaborate on their implementation.
The NGF’s meeting underscored the importance of continued collaboration among state governments, security agencies, and international partners to address current and future challenges.
