Headline: NSIB DG Accuses NRC and NIMASA of Failing to Remit Statutory Revenue

Alex Badeh, Director-General of the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has accused the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) of failing to remit their statutory revenue contributions to the bureau. This, he says, is a violation of the NSIB Establishment Act of 2022.

Badeh made the allegations on Friday during the re-opening ceremony of the bureau’s regional office in Lagos State. The office had been demolished during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to make way for development.

Badeh explained that the lack of compliance with the NSIB Establishment Act has significantly impacted the bureau’s operations. According to the Act, NIMASA is required to remit 3% of the gross freight from international cargo, while the NRC should contribute 5% of ticket sales and cargo charges.

“This financial shortfall not only limits our operational capabilities but also hinders our growth and effectiveness in safeguarding Nigerians’ lives,” Badeh said.

He called for increased financial support from the Federal Government to enable the NSIB to effectively carry out its mandate, conduct thorough investigations, and improve safety standards in Nigeria’s transportation sector.

Minister’s Response:

Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, addressed the issue at the event, recalling the unjust demolition of the NSIB office. Keyamo praised Badeh for his dedication and acknowledged the challenges faced by the bureau.

“The DG has been pivotal in the progress of the NSIB, and while the demolition of the office was unfortunate, we are committed to supporting the bureau’s vital role in ensuring transportation safety,” Keyamo said.

On the matter of the non-remitted funds, Keyamo assured that efforts are underway to resolve the issue and promised that improvements would be seen soon.

Badeh’s comments highlight ongoing financial and operational challenges faced by the NSIB, underscoring the need for adherence to statutory regulations and government support to enhance transportation safety across Nigeria.
