Nigerian Music Icon Onyeka Onwenu Laid to Rest in Lagos

Lagos, August 30, 2024 — Nigeria’s celebrated music icon Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” has been laid to rest in Lagos. The funeral service took place at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, followed by a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi.

Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, died at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja after collapsing at an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

The burial was attended by notable figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti. Their presence underscored Onwenu’s significant impact on both the music industry and public life.

Onwenu’s illustrious career spanned music, broadcasting, acting, politics, and activism. She is remembered not only for her numerous hits but also for her influential role in various societal and political spheres.
