Abeokuta, Ogun State — An 18-year-old girl, Habibat Akinsanya, who was reported missing, has been found dead on her father’s farm in Obasa, Mile 6, along Ajebo Road, Abeokuta. The victim was discovered on Sunday with multiple machete wounds to her head and other parts of her body, and her hands bound behind her back.
According to reliable sources, Akinsanya had been sexually assaulted before her death. The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the case is being investigated as a premeditated murder.
The victim’s father, Shamsuddeen Akinsanya, reported his daughter missing to the Kemta Police Division on August 31, 2024. Habibat was last seen leaving her father’s house on August 30, 2024, to assist her sister, who runs a Point of Sale (POS) business in the Kemta area. Onyeka, an individual who worked for the father, allegedly told Habibat that her mother needed her at the farm for cassava harvest.
The family grew concerned when Habibat did not arrive at the POS shop or return home. This prompted Shamsuddeen to file a missing person report with the police.
A police source, speaking anonymously, revealed that the murder might be linked to a revenge attack on the family, though it was not specified if it was cult-related. The victim was lured under false pretenses, restrained, sexually assaulted, and murdered. A subsequent call demanding money was traced to a number in Oke Egunya, Totoro, but the search did not yield results until the discovery of the body on the family farm.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola stated that a manhunt has been launched for Onyeka, who remains at large. She emphasized that in missing persons cases, law enforcement typically advises waiting 24 to 48 hours before filing a report, as some individuals may return within that timeframe.
“The investigation is ongoing, and our officers are working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” Odutola said.
