Federal Ministry of Education Launches eLearn Platform to Transform Nigerian Education

The Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the UK FCDO-funded Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) programme, has unveiled a new centralised e-learning platform named eLearn, aimed at revolutionising education across Nigeria.

The eLearn platform provides a comprehensive array of high-quality educational resources, including interactive exercises, videos, and texts, catering to learners and educators from basic schools to tertiary institutions. This initiative is designed to enhance professional training for teachers and enrich learning experiences, while promoting digital inclusion and accessibility.

A two-day stakeholder workshop in Abuja showcased the platform, where Prof. Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education, represented by Gbenga Odewale of the Ministry, reiterated the government’s commitment to integrating technology into education. The workshop highlighted the government’s efforts to develop and consolidate e-learning resources through the PLANE collaboration.

“Our commitment to integrating technology in education is reflected in our policies and initiatives,” Odewale said. “We have also worked with PLANE to create a reference repository of eLearning resources to centralise available educational content in the country. We hope that teachers, students, and parents will leverage these resources to elevate the quality of education in Nigeria.”

The platform’s launch is timely, as it aims to bridge the educational gap by providing equal access to resources and opportunities for all students, regardless of their geographical location or socio-economic status.

Ian Attfield, Senior Education Adviser at the British High Commission, underscored the importance of ensuring inclusion and accessibility. “It is crucial to address the digital divide, particularly for rural communities and individuals with disabilities,” Attfield emphasized. “Efforts must be made to make digital resources accessible to women, girls, and individuals with various learning disabilities and sensory impairments.”

The eLearn platform is poised to make a significant impact on Nigeria’s educational landscape, promoting equal access to quality learning resources and supporting the country’s broader educational goals.
