Tragedy struck on Sunday night and Monday morning on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, as three individuals lost their lives and two others were critically injured in two separate road accidents.
According to eyewitness reports, the fatal accident occurred near the Academy area in the Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State. A Toyota Sienna bus with number plate JJJ 515 HZ reportedly ran over three pedestrians at a bus stop. All three victims—one male and two females—died on the spot.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mayowa Odeowo, stated, “Aside from the pedestrians who lost their lives, none of the passengers of the ill-fated bus were injured.”
In a second accident, which took place around 10:15 a.m. on Monday, two passengers sustained serious injuries when a white commercial Mitsubishi Mazda vehicle (NKD 06 XG) collided with an ash-coloured Ford vehicle (AAA 241 FY). The crash occurred on the same Lagos-Ibadan Expressway but without fatalities.
Odeowo reported, “Fifteen individuals were involved in the accident, including six females and nine males. Two people, one male and one female, sustained serious injuries and were promptly taken to LAD Medical Hospital for treatment.”
The FRSC attributed the accident to a loss of control and speeding, emphasizing the dangers posed by excessive speed on Nigerian roads. The command urged drivers to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to speed limits to prevent further accidents.
“The police have since taken custody of the damaged vehicles,” Odeowo added, reiterating that over-speeding continues to be a major threat to road safety in the country.
These accidents follow a pattern of frequent crashes on Nigeria’s highways, with authorities urging motorists to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations.
