The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing tax compliance among Nigerian businesses through a strategic partnership with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). This collaboration was announced during the opening ceremony of the 19th Abuja International Trade Fair, themed “Mobility: Options for Transportation, Trade Finance, and Taxation,” held in Abuja on Monday.
FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji, represented by Dr. Lovette Ononuga, Director of Tax Payers Services, commended the ACCI for its role in promoting trade and collaboration among entrepreneurs. “This event highlights the strength and resilience of Nigerian entrepreneurs,” Adedeji noted.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration in advancing tax advocacy and promoting voluntary compliance, stating that partnerships with institutions like the ACCI are essential for raising awareness about the benefits of tax compliance. “Working together, we help create a culture of compliance that not only strengthens the tax system but also contributes to the overall stability and predictability of the business environment,” Ononuga added.
Ononuga also highlighted the role of technology in simplifying tax compliance, mentioning that automation has made it easier for businesses to thrive and fulfill their tax obligations. She reiterated FIRS’s customer-centric approach, aimed at equipping tax officials with the skills necessary to effectively serve the public.
ACCI President Emeka Obegolu welcomed attendees and acknowledged the Trade Fair’s importance as a platform for connecting businesses. He stated, “The AITF has established itself as a premier multi-sectoral event in Nigeria, offering domestic and international exhibitors the opportunity to showcase new products and gain insights into evolving industry trends.”
The theme of this year’s fair resonated throughout discussions, emphasizing the critical elements of economic growth. Obegolu explained, “Efficient transportation options help businesses overcome logistical challenges, streamline supply chains, and reduce operational costs.”
Dele Oye, National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, praised the partnership and underscored the need for effective policies that foster a conducive business environment. He stated, “The significance of efficient transportation networks, accessible trade finance solutions, and fair taxation policies cannot be overstated as we seek to position Nigeria as a leader in regional and global commerce.”
The fair, running for 12 days, features over 500 exhibitors showcasing more than 10,000 products and services, serving as both a trade hub and a venue for knowledge-sharing and networking among industry leaders and policymakers.
