As Rivers State approaches its local government elections on October 5, 2024, several Caretaker Committee Chairmen loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Action People’s Party (APP). This shift comes amid speculation that Fubara may also leave the PDP due to tensions with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who currently serves as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Despite Fubara’s recent assurances to the PDP’s Board of Trustees that he remains committed to the party, the defections signal growing discontent within his ranks. Key figures, including Port Harcourt City Council’s CTC Chairman, Ezebunwo Ichemati, and Khana LGA’s CTC Chairman, Marvin Yobana, have publicly aligned with the APP, promoting their candidacies under its banner.
Ichemati, campaigning for a substantive chairmanship position, has pledged to provide credible leadership and avoid negative campaigning. Similarly, Yobana announced his defection during a recent event, introducing Martins Ibibo as the anticipated executive chairman of Khana post-election.
Sunny Wokekoro, Rivers APP Chairman, emphasized the party’s readiness to reshape governance in the state, highlighting upcoming senatorial campaigns starting in Khana LGA. With candidates already screened by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, the APP aims to mobilize support and change the political narrative in the region.
