Court to Hear Plea of 109 Foreign Hackers Allegedly Targeting Nigerians

Abuja, November 14, 2024 – The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled November 22, 2024, for the trial of 109 foreign nationals accused of attempting to defraud Nigerians in a massive cybercrime scheme.

International Ring of Hackers
The defendants, identified as citizens from China, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia, and Myanmar, were arrested after an extensive investigation by the Nigeria Police Force. They face a six-count charge, including allegations of cyber fraud and other related offenses.

Charges and Legal Proceedings
The charges were filed following the hackers’ coordinated attempts to exploit vulnerable individuals and institutions within Nigeria. Authorities have been cracking down on international cybercrime rings targeting the Nigerian economy, with this case being one of the largest in recent years.

The court’s decision to hear the plea on November 22 signals a significant step in addressing the growing threat of foreign-based cybercrime targeting Nigerian citizens and businesses.

The prosecution is expected to present detailed evidence of the hackers’ activities, while the defense will argue against the charges, setting the stage for a high-profile trial.

Ongoing Global Efforts to Tackle Cybercrime
The case reflects the increasing need for international cooperation in tackling cybercrime. Nigerian authorities are working closely with international agencies to apprehend cybercriminals and prevent future attacks on the country’s digital infrastructure.

This trial will likely serve as a precedent for other international cybercrime cases, as Nigeria strengthens its legal framework to protect its citizens from global digital threats.
