Ogun Monarch in Viral Assault Video Arraigned, Stripped of Title

Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, the Olorile-Ifo of Ifo Local Government Area in Ogun State, has been arraigned in court for allegedly assaulting a 73-year-old man.

A viral two-minute video showed the monarch boasting about his influence over law enforcement and threatening the elderly chief, stating, “Even if you die, we shall bury you and nothing will happen.” The footage also depicted the man kneeling on the road while being slapped and verbally abused by the king.

Government Intervention and Suspension

Following the incident, both the embattled monarch and the victim were summoned on Monday by the Commissioner of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for interrogation. Consequently, the monarch was suspended for six months pending further investigation.

A statement from the Ogun State Government emphasized that the suspension was necessary to uphold the dignity of individuals and protect the sanctity of the revered traditional institution.

Part of the statement reads: “This decision became imperative due to the reckless utterances and public misconduct of the Kabiyesi, as evident in the widely circulated social media post. After an investigation, the Kabiyesi has been suspended and stripped of the paraphernalia of the stool of Olorile-Ifo pending the determination of his culpability or otherwise.”

Court Arraignment and Bail

On Tuesday, Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed that Oba Ogunjobi was arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to breach public peace. The monarch was granted bail, and the case has been adjourned to March 6, 2025.
