A major breakthrough in the fight against organized crime was recorded in Rivers State as police operatives shot and killed a notorious kidnap kingpin during a gun duel in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to a statement by the Rivers State Police Command, the suspect—who had long been on the police watchlist for multiple abductions and violent crimes—was tracked to a hideout in the Emohua axis of the East-West Road, where he engaged officers in a fierce exchange of gunfire before being fatally wounded.
“The operation was the result of sustained intelligence gathering and surveillance,” said the command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko. “The suspect was responsible for a series of high-profile abductions, including the kidnapping of prominent businessmen and the killing of security personnel.”
Residents of the area expressed relief at the news, describing the late suspect as a menace who had terrorized communities and commuters along the busy highway for months. Some even recounted how his gang operated roadblocks at night, abducting victims for ransom.
Police said items recovered from the scene included sophisticated weapons, multiple mobile phones believed to belong to victims, and charms allegedly used for protection.
While the suspect’s name was not released pending formal identification and further investigation, police officials confirmed that his death marks a significant disruption to a violent kidnapping syndicate operating in the region.
“This is a warning to other criminals,” SP Iringe-Koko added. “The Rivers State Police Command will not rest until all such elements are brought to justice.”
Authorities say efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the gang, while calling on the public to assist with credible information.
The development comes amid a broader crackdown on criminal networks across the Niger Delta, as security agencies intensify efforts to restore peace and safety along major transportation corridors.
