A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chinedu Okafor, has called on Nigerians to integrate regular sporting activities into their daily routines, emphasizing the crucial role of physical exercise in improving public health and reducing the burden of lifestyle-related diseases.
Speaking during a community health and wellness outreach in Abuja on Saturday, Hon. Okafor urged government agencies, schools, and community leaders to prioritise sports and recreational activities as a strategic approach to combating the rising prevalence of conditions such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes.
“Our health sector is stretched thin, and one of the most effective ways to reduce pressure on hospitals is to promote preventive health through sports and fitness,” he said. “Physical activity is not just for athletes—it should be a part of our everyday life.”
The lawmaker highlighted the need for policy interventions that support the construction of public sporting facilities, encourage corporate investment in wellness programs, and mandate physical education in schools across all levels.
He also called on local governments to organize community sports festivals and fitness campaigns to foster a culture of active living.
Experts at the event backed Hon. Okafor’s call, noting that sedentary lifestyles, poor diets, and lack of exercise are major contributors to the country’s rising non-communicable disease burden.
The event featured health screenings, aerobics, and football matches aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of regular exercise.
Hon. Okafor concluded by reaffirming his commitment to introducing a bill that would support increased funding for grassroots sports development and wellness education nationwide.
