The Cherubim & Seraphim (C&S) Church, one of Nigeria’s oldest indigenous Christian denominations, has issued a stern warning to its members and clergy against promoting or practicing unapproved doctrines that deviate from the church’s foundational beliefs.
The warning was delivered during the church’s annual general council meeting in Lagos, where senior leaders expressed concern over a growing trend of doctrinal distortions within some branches and prayer groups operating under the C&S banner.
Speaking at the gathering, Supreme Head of the Church, His Most Eminence Prophet Solomon Alao, emphasized that the C&S Church remains firmly rooted in biblical teachings and the traditions laid down by its founders. He noted that recent reports of unauthorized prophecies, rituals, and external spiritual influences were threatening the church’s unity and credibility.
“We will not tolerate strange doctrines that are neither biblical nor part of our heritage. Every member and minister must adhere strictly to our doctrine as guided by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God,” he declared.
The leadership also reiterated that any church assembly or prayer group operating outside the established liturgical framework and without approval from the national headquarters risks sanction or disaffiliation.
The statement comes amid rising concerns over doctrinal variations and practices such as commercialization of spiritual gifts, unauthorized ‘deliverance’ sessions, and syncretic influences from traditional beliefs, particularly among younger, self-styled prophets.
The C&S Church, founded in 1925, is known for its blend of charismatic worship, white garments, and emphasis on holiness and prophetic revelation—but within clearly defined spiritual boundaries.
“We are not against spiritual gifts, but they must operate in order, with discipline, and under the authority of the church,” said Apostle Mary Olayemi, a senior leader in the women’s ministry.
Church leaders encouraged members to report any unauthorized teachings or practices to their local presbyteries, and called on younger ministers to undergo proper theological training and mentorship.
The C&S Church says it remains committed to spiritual revival, scriptural integrity, and unity in Christ as it marks its centennial year of service.
