In a renewed push to improve learning conditions in public schools, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has approved the procurement of 15,716 chairs and desks for primary school pupils across the state.

The initiative, announced by the State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), is part of the administration’s broader efforts to address infrastructure gaps and enhance basic education delivery in rural and urban areas alike.

Executive Chairman of NSUBEB, Mohammed Dan’Azumi, confirmed the development during an inspection visit to a school facility in Doma Local Government Area, noting that the governor’s directive aims to ensure that “no child learns on bare floors.”

“This intervention will drastically reduce the furniture deficit in our public primary schools and create a more conducive environment for effective teaching and learning,” Dan’Azumi said.

Many public schools in Nasarawa have long grappled with overcrowded classrooms and inadequate furniture, often forcing pupils to sit on the floor during lessons — a situation educators say hinders academic performance and affects children’s well-being.

Education stakeholders across the state welcomed the move, describing it as a timely response to the sector’s challenges. The procurement is expected to benefit hundreds of schools, with priority given to the most underserved communities.

Governor Sule, in a separate statement, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in human capital development through education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.

Delivery and distribution of the desks and chairs are slated to begin next month, with strict monitoring mechanisms in place to ensure transparency and accountability.
