Ilorin, Kwara State – A routine morning journey turned harrowing for 18 students of Kwara State University, Malete (KWASU), when their commercial bus suddenly burst into flames along Shao Road near Sobi Barracks on Wednesday at approximately 7:54 a.m.
According to Kwara State Fire Service spokesperson Hassan Adekunle, the blaze originated from a spark in the engine compartment and swiftly engulfed the 18-seater vehicle. Firefighters responded promptly, extinguishing the flames and ensuring all students disembarked safely—remarkably, without any injuries.
The bus, registration number XUF 134 ZD, was completely destroyed. In the aftermath, Adekunle urged motorists to conduct routine pre-trip vehicle checks, emphasizing the importance of mechanical maintenance to avert life-threatening emergencies.
The dramatic escape highlights persistent safety challenges on Ilorin roads, particularly for student commuters reliant on commercial transport. It has sparked renewed calls from community members and university officials for improved transportation safety protocols and stricter vehicle maintenance regulations.
No casualties were recorded, and investigations into the incident’s mechanical causes are expected to follow as part of broader efforts to prevent future occurrences.
