ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated celebrated Nigerian poet and spoken word artist Maryam Bukar Hassan, known as Alhanislam, on her recent appointment as the United Nations Global Advocate for Peace.
Atiku, in a message shared via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, praised Hassan for her unwavering dedication to justice, youth empowerment, and social cohesion through the power of poetry and advocacy.
“I’m incredibly proud of Maryam Bukar Hassan, @Alhan_islam, on her well-deserved designation as the UN Global Advocate for Peace,” Atiku wrote. “A gifted poet and fierce voice for justice, she has used her art to uplift, empower, and unite.”
The former Vice President fondly recalled a past moment when Hassan used her craft to narrate his political journey, further illustrating her unique ability to blend creative expression with meaningful impact.
“She even once captured my journey through her powerful spoken word,” he noted. “Her poetry has echoed with compassion, inspired peace, and amplified the hopes of countless young people.”
Atiku described Hassan’s appointment as not only a personal triumph but a source of national pride, especially for young African women.
“Maryam’s elevation is a proud moment for Nigeria and for every young African woman with a dream. Keep soaring,” he added.
The United Nations announced Hassan’s appointment last week, commending her extensive work in promoting peace, education, gender equity, and human rights, particularly in conflict-affected communities across Africa.
A native of Borno State, Hassan has performed on some of the world’s most prominent stages, including the African Union and the United Nations Headquarters. Her poetry, known for its emotional depth and focus on social justice, has earned her recognition as a powerful voice in the global movement for peace and youth engagement.
She has also collaborated with several national and international organisations to build creative platforms that foster community healing and peacebuilding, particularly in regions grappling with violence and displacement.
As the new UN Global Advocate for Peace, Hassan is expected to use her platform to continue championing dialogue, inclusivity, and resilience, especially among young people in fragile and post-conflict societies.
