Four Arrested Over Alleged Theft of Newborn at Ekiti Health Centre

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged abduction of a newborn baby at a health centre in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The disturbing incident occurred on Monday morning, sending shockwaves through the facility and nearby areas when healthcare workers discovered that a baby, reportedly born Sunday evening, had mysteriously disappeared from the maternity ward.

A source within the hospital told PUNCH Online that the baby’s absence was noticed during a routine check by nurses on duty.

“It was when the nurses wanted to tend to the baby that they discovered the child was gone. The mother had delivered the baby just the night before,” the source said.

Another eyewitness described the chaos that erupted at the scene:

“The entire facility was thrown into confusion. The mother, staff, and even traders in the nearby market were in panic. No one could comprehend how a baby could vanish from a hospital.”

Police Swing Into Action

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Ekiti State, Sunday Abutu, said the Commissioner of Police, Joseph Eribo, had immediately ordered a full-scale investigation.

“The CP has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a thorough probe and ensure the safe recovery of the baby,” Abutu stated.

He added that four individuals have so far been arrested and are assisting with the investigation.

“The suspects are providing credible information, and we are optimistic about progress in the case,” he said.

Public Outcry and Safety Concerns

The incident has reignited concerns over security at public health institutions in the state. Residents are demanding improved surveillance and tighter protocols to prevent a recurrence of such a disturbing event.

Authorities have not released the identities of the suspects or confirmed whether the baby has been recovered as of press time.
