LAGOS, August 5, 2025 — In a renewed effort to strengthen civic responsibility and deepen inclusive governance, the Lagos State Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement has held a one-day sensitisation and engagement programme targeted at grassroots communities.
The event, themed Political and Social Inclusion Sensitisation and Engagement, was hosted at Aiyetobi Community in Agbado, Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area, Ipaja.
In a statement released Monday, the office said the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between government and citizens, particularly at the community level.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen, the Director of the Citizens Engagement Department, Dr. Babatunde Omotayo, underscored the importance of citizen participation in the democratic process.
“In a democracy, citizens are not just beneficiaries of public policy, but co-creators,” he said. “Their inputs are essential for building inclusive and sustainable development. This programme is a strategic step to bring governance closer to the people.”
Dr. Omotayo urged participants to actively engage by sharing their concerns and ideas, noting that inclusive governance thrives when citizens understand their rights and responsibilities.
Residents Welcome the Initiative
Participants at the event lauded the Lagos State Government for creating a platform to amplify grassroots voices.
Akinboyewa Bolarinwa, a community member, said the initiative would help demystify government policies and make them more accessible.
“It’s a welcome development. Many of us at the grassroots struggle to understand or access government programmes. This will change that,” he said.
Another attendee, Ayobola Bakare, expressed optimism that her participation would empower her to engage more meaningfully with state initiatives.
“I’ve missed out on a lot of opportunities simply because I didn’t know where to go. Now, I understand what’s available and how to access it,” she noted.
Direct Access to Government Services
A highlight of the programme was the on-the-spot registration for key government services, including enrolment into the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) and the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) schemes.
These services are expected to improve access to social welfare, healthcare, and other essential government benefits.
The programme is part of an ongoing series by the Lagos State Government to promote inclusive policy-making and civic engagement at the grassroots level.
