Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi could be on his way out of Nottingham Forest after falling further down the attacking pecking order following a flurry of summer signings at the City Ground.
According to Football Insider, Forest have given the 28-year-old the green light to leave, with manager Nuno Espírito Santo opting to bolster his squad with younger attacking options.
Awoniyi, who was left on the bench during Forest’s 3-1 opening-day win over Brentford, now finds himself behind Chris Wood, £17m Brazilian signing Igor Jesus, and new £26m arrival Arnaud Kalimuendo.
Kalimuendo, 23, joined from Rennes after finishing as Ligue 1’s third-highest scorer last season with 18 goals in 34 appearances. The French forward, a former Paris Saint-Germain academy graduate, is seen as a long-term solution to Forest’s scoring needs.
Awoniyi’s struggles extend back to last season, when injuries and inconsistency limited him to just one Premier League goal. His promising debut campaign in 2022/23 where he scored decisive goals to help Forest avoid relegation—has since been overshadowed by limited minutes and competition for places.
The Nigerian forward’s situation worsened after Santo also added attacking talents Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee to his squad, leaving Awoniyi effectively as Forest’s fourth-choice striker.
With Forest preparing for a return to European football and seeking greater depth, several fringe players are expected to depart before the transfer window closes, with Awoniyi now firmly in that category.
A move away could provide the 28-year-old with the playing time he needs to reignite his career, having already proven his scoring pedigree in Germany with Union Berlin before his Premier League switch.
