The Federal Government has announced that Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day anniversary will be marked with low-key activities.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during a Pre-Independence World Press Conference held on Monday in Abuja.
According to him, the celebration, themed “All Hands on Deck,” began with a Jummat Prayer on Friday and a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday.
He further revealed that the highlight of the programme will be the official unveiling of the National Value Charter, championed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
“The National Students’ Debate is also another activity that will be held to mark the 65th Independence anniversary celebration,” Idris added.
The National Value Charter is designed as a framework for promoting national pride and responsible citizenship, outlining both government commitments and citizens’ obligations.
Divided into two parts, the charter details the “Nigerian Promise,” which commits the government to values such as equality, democracy, peace, freedom, entrepreneurship, inclusivity, and meritocracy. On the other hand, the “Citizens’ Commitment” highlights responsibilities including discipline, accountability, tolerance, leadership, resilience, and environmental awareness.
The NOA plans to drive this initiative through sensitisation campaigns, digital platforms, and community engagement, with the goal of fostering a more unified and value-driven society.
