New Rule: U.S. Student Visa Applicants Must Share Social Media as Applications Resume

The United States government has officially resumed the processing of student visa applications for international students after a temporary suspension, but with a new condition: all applicants must provide access to their public social media handles as part of enhanced background checks.

The U.S. Department of State made the announcement this week, signaling a return to full-scale visa processing for F-1 and M-1 student categories following recent system upgrades and policy reviews.

As part of the updated guidelines, applicants will be required to list all social media platforms and usernames used within the last five years on their visa application forms. The move, according to U.S. officials, is aimed at strengthening national security and vetting individuals for potential red flags related to extremist behavior or immigration fraud.

“This is part of a broader effort to improve the vetting process while ensuring legitimate students continue to have access to U.S. academic institutions,” a State Department spokesperson said.

The rule does not require passwords or private content, but will allow consular officers to review public activity for signs of security threats or misrepresentation.

The development has generated mixed reactions globally. While some U.S. universities have welcomed the reopening of student visa issuance ahead of the Fall 2025 academic session, privacy advocates and international student groups have expressed concern over the social media requirement.

“This could have a chilling effect on free expression and may deter talented students from applying,” said Rosa Ahmed, a spokesperson for the International Students Advocacy Network.

Analysts say the policy reflects a growing global trend where digital footprints are increasingly factored into immigration and security decisions.

Over one million international students are currently enrolled in U.S. institutions, contributing billions to the American economy annually. The visa resumption is expected to ease uncertainty for thousands of prospective students, especially from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, who had faced delays in recent months.

Embassies and consulates worldwide have been directed to expedite scheduling of student visa interviews as the new academic year approaches.
