Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has condemned the demolition of a property belonging to his brother in Lagos, claiming the action was carried out without any court order or legal justification.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Obi described the incident as a blatant abuse of power and a disregard for due process. He alleged that the property, located in the highbrow area of Victoria Island, was brought down by state authorities without proper notice or judicial backing.
“This act is not just about my family; it reflects a troubling pattern of impunity and disrespect for the rule of law,” Obi stated. “Demolishing a legally acquired property without a court order sets a dangerous precedent.”
While details surrounding the demolition remain unclear, Obi emphasized that the building was fully documented and had met all regulatory requirements. He called on the Lagos State Government to explain the legal basis for the action and provide restitution if due process was violated.
Sources close to the Obi family say the property was being renovated for commercial use when it was abruptly pulled down last week. Videos of the demolition have since surfaced on social media, sparking public debate over property rights and state overreach.
The Lagos State Government has yet to issue an official statement in response to Obi’s claims. However, legal analysts say if the allegations are true, the action may be in breach of constitutional protections and land administration laws.
Obi urged affected citizens to speak out against similar incidents and called for reforms to protect property owners from arbitrary actions by state authorities.
