FMC Abuja Names New Emergency Unit Head Following Viral Neglect Scandal

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abuja has appointed a new head for its Emergency Department in response to widespread public outrage sparked by a viral video showing alleged neglect of patients.

The hospital’s management announced the appointment of Dr. Sarah Adeniyi, an experienced emergency medicine specialist, who will take over immediately to restore order and improve patient care standards.

The decision follows a video that circulated on social media last week, depicting patients allegedly being ignored and denied urgent attention, raising concerns over the quality of emergency services at the centre.

In a statement, FMC Abuja’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Michael Okon, expressed regret over the incident and reaffirmed the hospital’s commitment to delivering timely and compassionate care.

“We have taken decisive steps to address the challenges highlighted by the video,” Dr. Okon said. “Dr. Adeniyi’s appointment reflects our dedication to ensuring that emergencies are handled with the utmost professionalism and urgency.”

The hospital also promised a full internal review and training for emergency staff to prevent future occurrences.

Public health advocates have welcomed the move but called for ongoing transparency and accountability in patient care.
