A senior aide to former President Muhammadu Buhari has dispelled widespread speculation about the former leader’s health, confirming that while Buhari is currently unwell, he is not in intensive care or in any life-threatening condition.
The clarification follows a flurry of social media reports on Tuesday suggesting that the 81-year-old former president had been rushed to an intensive care unit in London — claims the aide described as “exaggerated and misleading.”
“Yes, the former president has taken ill, but he is stable, receiving care, and certainly not in any ICU as is being falsely reported,” the aide told [Publication Name] in a phone interview. “We understand the public’s concern, but there is no cause for alarm.”
Public Concern and Misinformation
News of Buhari’s alleged critical condition trended widely online, prompting reactions from political allies, critics, and concerned citizens. Hashtags like #PrayForBuhari and #BuhariHealth gained traction on X (formerly Twitter), as Nigerians speculated about the health of the ex-military leader who ruled from 2015 to 2023.
The aide urged Nigerians to rely on verified sources and refrain from spreading panic through unverified content.
“This is not the time for sensationalism. Former President Buhari is a respected statesman who deserves privacy and dignity,” the aide added.
A Legacy Still Watched
Though retired from active politics, Buhari remains a towering figure in Nigerian public life. His health has long been a subject of public interest, particularly following a prolonged medical leave in 2017 during his presidency, which sparked similar concerns.
He has spent much of his post-presidency time between Daura, Katsina State, and the United Kingdom.
As of press time, no official medical bulletin has been released, but sources close to the family say the former president is expected to make a full recovery and will remain under observation for the coming days.
