Suspected Cultist Arrested in Connection to Edo Vigilante Killings

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspected cultist believed to be connected to the recent killing of local vigilante members in the state.

The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further investigation, was apprehended during a targeted operation by anti-cultism officers in the Ikpoba-Okha area of Benin City. Authorities say he is linked to a series of violent attacks that left at least three vigilante members dead in recent weeks.

“This arrest is a major breakthrough in our efforts to dismantle cult networks behind the surge in killings,” said Edo State Police spokesperson SP Chidi Nwabuzor. “The suspect is currently assisting with further investigations.”

Ongoing Security Crackdown

The arrest follows weeks of heightened security operations across Edo State, especially in areas where clashes between rival cult groups and local security outfits have intensified. The vigilante group targeted in the attacks had been actively involved in joint patrols with police to curb street crime.

Community on Edge

Residents of affected communities have expressed growing concern over the violence, calling on state authorities to do more to protect vigilante members who often serve as the first line of defense in rural and urban neighborhoods.

“They are risking their lives for the community, and now they are being hunted,” said community leader Chief Efosa Obamwonyi. “This is unacceptable.”

Next Steps

The police said more arrests are expected as investigations continue and warned cult groups that law enforcement is “fully mobilized” to dismantle their operations.

The suspect is expected to face charges related to conspiracy, murder, and unlawful association.
