Lagos Police Revise Movement Restriction to 6am–3pm Ahead of LG Elections

The Lagos State Police Command has announced an adjustment to the movement restriction for the upcoming Local Government Elections, revising the hours to 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on election day.

The update was made public on Wednesday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, who said the change aims to strike a balance between ensuring public safety and minimizing disruption to residents.

Earlier directives had imposed a blanket restriction from midnight to 6:00 p.m., sparking concerns among business owners, commuters, and civic groups. The revised hours, officials say, reflect public feedback and logistical considerations.

“Following consultations with relevant stakeholders, the restriction of movement on election day has been adjusted to run from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.,” SP Hundeyin stated. “This will allow security agencies to secure the voting process while giving residents time to return to normal activities afterward.”

He emphasized that only those on essential duties, including accredited electoral officials, security personnel, and emergency responders, would be exempt from the restriction.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) will conduct elections across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), with heightened security presence expected at polling units and collation centers.

The police urged all residents to conduct themselves peacefully and report any suspicious activity through dedicated emergency hotlines.

Civic groups welcomed the adjustment but called on authorities to ensure the public is adequately informed and that polling logistics are efficiently managed to prevent voter apathy.
