The Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero has re-instated Aminu Babba Dan Agundi as a member of the Kano emirate council, 17 years after Mr Dan-Agundi was deposed by the current emir’s father late Ado Bayero.
DAILY FOCUS recalls that Mr Dan-Agundi, who held the traditional title of Sarkin Dawaki Maituta, under the late Bayero’s reign was sacked from the council, over alleged insubordination in 2003.
However, the traditional chief, mounted a legal battle to challenge his dismissal, leading to the Supreme Court which affirmed his deposition.
In its ruling on June, 5, 2020 the apex court held that Mr Dan-Agundi’s removal by late Bayero from the positions of Sarkin Dawaki Maituta and District head of Gabasawa local government area, was in order.
The unanimous judgement was led by Justice Mary Odili.
However, despite the court ruling, Emir Aminu Bayero, son of the late Bayero, has re-instated Mr Dan-Agundi as a member of the Kano Emirate Council.
It was learnt that Mr Dan-Agundi’s reinstatement was announced in a letter signed by Dan Rimin Kano, Alhaji Sarki Waziri and addressed to Usman Alhaji, secretary to the state government.
According to the letter, seen by DAILY FOCUS, Mr Dan-Agundi would now hold a modified title of Sarkin Dawaki Babba.
“The SSG has received the letter on July 8, 2020 and has forwarded it to the executive governor and we are waiting for his approval,” Uba Abdullahi, a spokesperson to Mr Alhaji told Daily Trust.
Similarly, the emir has also reappointed Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero, his older brother as the new Wamban Kano.
It may be recalled that Mr Sanusi, had gone on self-exile to Abuja after his rival, Muhammadu Sanusi II, the former emir of Kano, defeated him in a bid to become the Kano emir after Bayero’s death in 2013.
