The Kano Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Corruption Commission has summoned a number of royal officials including the wife of Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II and wives of his late predecessor, Ado Bayero, in connection with an ongoing probe into the accounts of the Emirate Council.
The invitation to the royal families was issued by the commission, despite a subsisting court order banning the commission from further harassing Emir Sanusi over the alleged misappropriation of N3.4 billion emirate council funds.
The probe is being seen as a witch-hunt against the monarch by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, himself facing allegations of collecting bribes in high denomination American dollars worth $5 million.
Daily Nigerian reports that the latest invitation to the royal families was for them to explain why the emirate council paid their foreign medical bills.
The anti-corruption commission had recently re-opened probe on the emirate finances, which it suspended two years ago, as crisis between Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and the emir worsens.
In a letter dated June 17, 2019, commission invited them to appear at the chairman’s office conference room on Monday June 24, 2019.
“The commission in the exercise of its power conferred to it under Section 9 and 15 of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Law 2008 (as amended) is further investigating an alleged violation of Section 26 of the Commission’s enabling Law in the management of Kano State Council Funds,” the letter signed by director of Public Complaints and Mediation read.
“Consequent upon the above and pursuant to the provision of Section 31(1) (a) and (b) of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Law 2008 (as amended) you are requested to extend the Commission’s invitation to some personalities that expenditures were incurred for them in the respect of medical sponsorship to overseas to appear before this commission along with relevant documents to shed more lights on same…”
