A former emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II has been officially confirmed as the Nigerian leader of the Tijjaniya Islamic order by the Supreme Leader of the sect Sheikh Mahi Nyass.
Mr Sanusi was confirmed during his visit to the city of Khaolak in Senegal, where he was invited for the closure of the 2021 Ramadan Tafsir.
Sheikh Mahi urged the monarch to be a worthy ambassador of the Tijjaniyya movement in Nigeria.
The position of Khalifa in Nigeria was last held by late business mogul and Islamic scholar Sheikh Isyaka Rabiu.
Before him, the post had been held by Mr Sanusi’s grandfather, Emir Muhammad Sanusi I.
