Kano State Commissioner for Local Government, Murtala Sule Garo has denied tearing up results sheets which led to disruption of collation at Nasarawa local government area during the governorship elections in the state.
Garo was arrested by police officers alongside chairman of the Nasarawa LGA Lamin Sani and the state Deputy Governor Nasiru Gawuna for allegedly storming the collation centre and destroying election results sheets.
The commissioner, who was almost stripped naked in the fracas, was reportedly beaten to pulp together with his accomplices before being arrested.
They were detained at the state police command headquarters in Bompai area and interrogated before they were released on bail.
The police command under CP Mohammed Wakili vowed to prosecute Garo and Sani.
However, speaking to newsmen on the issue Thursday, Garo denied involvement in the disruption of the collation process and instead blamed Faruk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives and Nasiru Sule Garo, a member of his own family for the incident.
Both are members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose governorship candidate Abba Kabir Yusuf polled 1,014,474 votes ahead of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who trailed behind with 987,819 votes in the elections.
The margin of victory between the two contenders is 26,655 votes but the election was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) because the number of canceled votes, which is over 128,000 has exceeded the margin.
Garo revealed that, even before he and Gawuna arrived the collation Centrer, after they got information that some PDP stalwarts were at the centre trying to disrupt the process, they noticed Faruk Lawan, Nasiru Sule Garo and other PDP agents tearing up the result sheets without resistance at the presence of everybody including the security agents manning the collation centre.
“It is not true, these people, the PDP people I can name some of them Hon. Faruk Lawan, Hon Nasiru Sule Garo and other members of PDP went to Nassarawa Local Government Collation Centre, assaulted the INEC officer on his back and tore the entire result sheets of the local government. The INEC Officer has reported the incident which you are aware of,” he said.
Garo also accused CP Wakili of taking sides with the PDP during the election.
”This Commissioner of Police has been compromised and is selective and we are not going to take it anymore, because he has not been fair to us at all.
”We were informed by our party agents, that some PDP stalwarts were tearing result sheets of the contentious Gama Ward, that is what prompted His Excellency the Deputy Governor who is from Nassarawa to and get first hand information,” he said.
