Kano State Government has assured that preparations are ongoing to transform the Sa”adatu Rimi College of Education to a full pledge University of Education in the state to give room for more students and courses of studies in the state.
The State Commissioner for Higher Education Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure gave the assurance while receiving the report of the transformation committee of the Sa’adatu Rimi College to University, held at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, City Campus.
The Commissioner said the State government under Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has directed the Ministry for Higher Education to look for means of possible transforming of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education to Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education in the state with a view to provide adequate, qualified and qualitative teachers in the the state.
She commended the committee for their wonderful performance for providing comprehensive and worthy reports despite the short scheduled and assured that the government will do everything possible to use the committee’s recommendations with immediate action.
Presenting the report, the Chairman of the committee, Prof. Jibril Dahiru Amin, said the committee report contained three segments of draft bill, academic plan and 5 year strategic plan, which will guide the transformation of the college into the University of Education.
He therefore urged the state government to expediate action towards promolugating the bill in to Law for the smooth take up of the University which firmed the major prerequisite of verification by the National University Commission.
He denied the rumour that the transformation of the University will affect some staff of the College, adding that the committee has recommended that all interested staff willing to remain in the University its at their will, therefore he thanked the College community for their maxisum support and cooperation accorded to the committee.
Prof. J. D Amin also thanked the State Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for giving them the opportunity to contributes their quota towards educational development in the state and Northern Nigeria at large.
A statement by Chief Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Sanusi A. Kofar Naisa said “he called on the state government to expediate action in providing legislative Law for the establishment of the University, while stressing the importance of additional University in the state to address the challenges of the students admission in tertiary institutions and provide qualified teachers in the state.”
In his remark, the Provost. of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Associates Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure commended Governor Ganduje for his passion to education sector and said the transformation of the college to University comes at the right time in view of the educational challenges bedeviling the sector.
