Police Officer rejects N1m bribe offered to secure release of kidnapper in Kano

The Kano state police command has arrested one Alhaji Bamuwa Umaru, 62, of Shika town, Sabon Gari local government area of Kaduna state for offering One Million Naira bribe to police officer to secure the release of a kidnapper.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa disclosed this to newsmen in a statement on Tuesday, evening.

He said the man approached the Officer in Charge of Anti-Kidnapping Squad, State Criminal Investigation Department, SP Aliyu Mohammed and offered him the sum of One Million Naira as bribe to secure the release of one Yusuf Ibrahim, 27, of Danjibga Village, Tsafe LGA, Zamfara State, a suspected kidnapper arrested at Rijiyar Zaki Motor Park Kano.

“The suspected kidnapper was arrested by a team of Operation Restore Peace led by CSP Usman Abdullahi, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Rijiyar Zaki Division Kano after he was identified by a driver they kidnapped along Funtuwa-Gusau Road, and collected the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000:00) as ransom before his release.

“On preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to the crime and further confessed to having participated in a series of kidnappings at Sheme, Yankara, faskari and Kucheri Villages in Katsina and Zamfara States respectively.”

According to Kiyawa, Ibrahim further confessed that their syndicate members killed about 10 of their kidnapped victims, and he alone killed 2 of the victims.

He added that Umaru approached the officer with the bribe requesting him to free the suspected kidnapper, which he (police) immediately turndown and arrested the man.

He said both the kidnapper and the man that offered the money will be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
