Police in Kano State have arrested thugs suspected to be linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) attempting to snatch ballot boxes at Gyadi-Gyadi area of Kano city during the ongoing governorship and state assembly elections.
It was learnt that dozens of the hoodlums stormed Gyadi-Gyadi ta kudu polling unit in Tarauni Local Government Area and grabbed a ballot box.
According to witnesses,the thugs had already snatched the box but were apprehended by security officers and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who recovered the ballot papers.
“The thugs already started removing and tearing the ballot papers that were cast. The security agents succeeded in recovering the box and arrested some of them while others ran away. They were instantly handed over to the Police.
An agent of party at the polling units alleged that the thugs were suspected to have been mobilized by supporters of the APC.
Meanwhile, the Police also reportedly fired teargas to foil another attempt to snatch ballot box in the state.
It was gathered that the incident happened at Tudun Wuzirci ward in Sagagi area of Gwale Local Government Area of the state.
It was also gathered that dozens of thugs arrived the polling unit purposely to snatch the ballot boxes, but Police and other INEC officials resisted the attempt.
The situation promoted Police to fire teargas, situation that caused people to scamper for safety.
When contacted, the spokesman of the Kano Police command, Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the ballot box snatching at Gyadi-Gyadi.
He said the state Police Commissioner, Wakili Muhammad visited the polling unit and normalcy had since returned.
He added that when the CP, who was on patrol received the information, he swiftly reported to the area and was briefed by INEC officials on duty.
On the Tudun Wuzirci incident, Mr Haruna, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, said they were not aware of the incident but they would investigate.
