“NAFDAC Destroys ₦43 Billion Worth of Substandard Drugs and Products in Ibadan”

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) destroyed substandard products worth ₦43 billion in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday. These products, which included falsified drugs, medical devices, and other unwholesome items, were disposed of at a dumpsite in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Christiana Adeyeye, represented by the Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Shabba Mohammed, revealed that the counterfeit products had been voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, non-governmental organizations, and trade unions. The seizures also followed several raids carried out by NAFDAC across various locations.

Among the confiscated items were aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement drugs, over-the-counter medicines, prescription-only medications, and banned substances like Codeine. Over ₦48 million worth of products, including narcotics and antimalarials, were seized from drug hawkers. Additionally, pharmaceutical vendors involved in the illegal warehousing and sale of Schedule One narcotics were targeted, resulting in the confiscation of goods valued at over ₦700 million.

NAFDAC urged the public to report unscrupulous manufacturers and illegal businesses to the agency, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in combating counterfeit drugs and unwholesome products. The event was witnessed by security agencies, the Oyo State Government, and other stakeholders.
