The death toll from the devastating petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction near Suleja, Niger State, has climbed to 86, with 55 individuals hospitalized with injuries.

The accident occurred on Saturday when a speeding fuel tanker crashed and spilled its contents on the road, sparking a catastrophic explosion. Residents who had gathered to scoop fuel, as well as those attempting rescues, were caught in the flames.

Mass Burial Held for Victims

Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), revealed that mass burials for 80 victims were conducted at the Dikko Primary Healthcare Center premises, while five were claimed by relatives and one passed away at the healthcare center.

“The mass burial was carried out between 5 pm and midnight by NSEMA, Gurara Local Government officials, and courageous volunteers,” Baba-Arah stated.

Governor and Federal Response

Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago, who visited the explosion site, imposed a ban on vehicles from the Maje axis using the Dikko bridge. He directed the Federal Road Safety Corps to establish a detachment in the area to enforce traffic regulations.

President Bola Tinubu expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information, Bayo Onanuga. Tinubu extended condolences to the victims’ families and the Niger State government, while also instructing agencies to ensure comprehensive medical care for the injured.

The President called on the National Orientation Agency to launch a nationwide campaign highlighting the dangers of fuel scooping and urged road safety authorities to implement preventive measures against similar incidents.

Federal Ministries Take Action

The Federal Government, through Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris, announced the transfer of critically injured victims from Suleja General Hospital to advanced medical facilities for better care. Idris, accompanied by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to supporting the affected families.

Former President Buhari’s Condolences

Former President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his grief in a statement by his media aide, Garba Shehu. Buhari lamented the recurring loss of lives from fuel scooping incidents despite repeated warnings. He extended his sympathies to the victims’ families and wished the injured a swift recovery.
