Benjamin Mendy Wins Legal Battle Against Manchester City Over Unpaid Wages

Former Manchester City Defender Successfully Challenges Wage Withholding
Benjamin Mendy has won a legal battle against Manchester City, recovering a significant portion of his unpaid wages that had been withheld during his criminal trial. The ruling marks a major victory for the player, who was acquitted of serious charges last year.

Dispute Over £500,000-a-Month Salary
The case revolves around Mendy’s £500,000 monthly salary, which was halted by Manchester City after his second arrest in 2021. The club argued that Mendy was “not presently ready and able to perform the obligations of his contract.” However, Mendy contested the move, claiming the salary deductions were unauthorized.

Mendy Claims £11 Million in Unpaid Wages
Mendy filed a claim for approximately £11 million before tax, covering a 22-month period when his wages were withheld. The tribunal ruled in his favor, though the exact amount of compensation remains under negotiation. If an agreement is not reached, a future hearing will determine the final figure.

Assurances from Manchester City’s Leadership
During the tribunal, it was revealed that Manchester City’s former Chief Operating Officer, Omar Berrada, had assured Mendy that his wages would resume if he was acquitted. However, when Mendy sought clarification from Berrada and the club’s Chief Executive, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, he received no response.

Financial Struggles During Legal Proceedings
While Mendy’s wages were suspended, he revealed that his teammates, including Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez, provided financial support. Mendy was also forced to sell his Cheshire mansion to cover legal fees, bills, and child support.

Manchester City Defends Wage Withholding Over Alleged Misconduct
City’s legal team defended the decision to withhold wages, citing Mendy’s alleged misconduct during his bail, including hosting parties during the lockdown. Manchester City’s legal representative, Sean Jones KC, argued that Mendy’s actions demonstrated irresponsible behavior, impacting his contractual obligations.

Personal Impact of the Legal Battle
Despite being acquitted, the legal proceedings have taken a significant emotional toll on Mendy. His legal team highlighted the strain the case had caused him, noting that it had been nearly three years since the police investigation began.

Mendy Returns to France to Continue Career
After his acquittal, Mendy returned to France to rebuild his football career. He currently plays for Lorient in Ligue 2, working to put his legal troubles behind him and focus on his professional future.
