Tinubu and Akpabio Reaffirm Commitment to Comprehensive Police Reform in Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio have reiterated their unwavering commitment to overhauling the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), emphasizing the need for modernization, enhanced professionalism, and improved welfare for officers.

During the recent National Police Day celebrations, President Tinubu highlighted the administration’s dedication to transforming the NPF into a modern, accountable, and citizen-focused institution. He underscored the importance of comprehensive reforms, including investment in training, capacity building, and the provision of modern equipment and technology to enhance operational effectiveness. Additionally, the president announced the institutionalization of April 7 as National Police Day to honor the sacrifices of police personnel and acknowledge their contributions to national security.

Senate President Akpabio, in his remarks, commended the efforts of the police leadership and expressed the National Assembly’s support for the reform agenda. He emphasized the need for a robust, transparent, and accountable policing system, advocating for the establishment of state police departments that are free from political interference and capable of addressing local security challenges effectively. Akpabio also called for the weeding out of unprofessional elements within the force to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the NPF.

These reaffirmations align with the administration’s broader security strategy, which includes proposals for state policing and increased funding for law enforcement agencies. The commitment to police reform reflects a concerted effort by the federal government and legislative bodies to address the evolving security challenges in Nigeria and to build a police force that upholds the rule of law and serves the interests of all citizens.
