Uche Secondus Warns of Threat to Democracy Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has expressed grave concerns about the future of democracy in Nigeria, suggesting that the upcoming 2027 elections may not occur. He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining democratic principles and governing the country poorly.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Secondus, through his Media Adviser, Ike Abonyi, reacted to the recent governorship election in Edo State, calling it “electoral fraud” that disregarded the rule of law and voters’ rights.

He highlighted the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Mahmoud Yakubu, stating that there has been no accountability for the issues surrounding the 2023 elections, which he claims have severely harmed Nigeria’s democratic integrity.

“The shameless boast by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje about applying the Edo template in future elections reveals a disturbing agenda to create a one-party state by silencing opposition,” Secondus said.

He emphasized that democracy thrives on diverse voices, warning that the APC’s approach could lead to an erosion of democratic processes. He detailed how the Edo election was marred by harassment of opposition figures and the compromising of security agencies and electoral officials.

“The world is watching as we risk damaging the democratic system that is vital for stability and progress in our nation,” he concluded.
